Everything else on this page exists to serve one problem: a repairer who has never held a laser, and the stretch of time before the results stop surprising them.
Delivery solves the equipment problem and leaves the skill problem completely untouched. Aiming under magnification, deciding where to place the energy, reading whether a joint has actually taken — those live in the hand, not in a manual. Experienced solderers are often the ones who struggle earliest, because the reflexes that made them quick at the torch have to be re-aimed.
Skipping the practice stage does not save the time it appears to save. It moves the cost onto the bench, where it is far more expensive.
We start you on scrap in the metals you genuinely repair, in a deliberate order: hold and aim, then a single tack, then a full joint, then that same joint on a piece with a finished surface. Each attempt is written down as it happens — the settings, the metal, the joint, and what it looked like afterwards.
There is no score we can hand you, and we will not invent one. Use these checks instead — every one of them is answerable at your own bench, with your own paperwork.
Trying one more setting is the right instinct, right up until it is not. Two operators will not arrive at the same result at the same point in their learning, and that is normal rather than a fault. Stop and bring us in when any of these is true:
On a stone-set piece the assessment comes before the pulse, never after. And when the piece itself is the question rather than the setting, stop guessing at it and put it in our hands. Send a sample and see the result
We will not publish response-time promises we cannot hold for every workshop and time zone. What we can describe honestly is the order things happen in, and what makes the answer useful.
"It looks wrong" cannot be worked with. A photograph at working distance, the metal, and what you already tried can be.
The surface of a failed joint usually says which way the setting moved. We tell you what we are reading, so the reasoning transfers to you.
What comes back is a direction and a starting point to trial on scrap of the same metal — not an instruction to apply directly to the customer's piece.
The loop only closes if the outcome comes back to us. Half the value of remote support is the second message, not the first.
Whatever settles the question gets written into your own log against that metal and joint, so the next occurrence is a lookup rather than another conversation.
Some questions cannot be settled from photographs. When that is the case we say so and ask for a sample instead of trading messages.
A single sheet of settings that covers every metal would be the most popular thing on this website, and the most damaging.
No one setting is right for every metal. Alloy and its content, the section you are joining, the joint geometry, the surface condition, whether the item has been repaired before, and what sits close to the working area all move the answer. Publishing one number for all of it would put your customers' pieces at risk.

Most bench stoppages are not a broken machine. They are an ordinary wear item, ordered late or ordered wrong.

Training makes a capable operator out of a willing one. It cannot make a machine suitable for work it was never validated for — so test that part first.
