Keeping Repair Work, and Its Margin, Inside the Shop

For a repair counter the question is rarely "can this be welded". It is "who welds it, and whose schedule does the customer end up waiting on".

When a job goes out to a trade bench, three things leave with it: part of the margin, control of when it comes back, and your ability to answer the person who phones to ask about their ring. None of that is a machine problem. It becomes one only when the shop decides to take the work back.

  • The answer at the counter changes. You describe work happening behind you, not work in transit.
  • The job stops queueing twice. It waits once, in your own tray, and not again in someone else's.
  • Small repairs stop being unprofitable. A quick job no longer carries the overhead of being sent anywhere.
  • Service stays a reason to visit you. Repair is the errand that brings a customer back through the door.

Bring the work back in stages, not in one weekend. Start with the categories your bench already knows cold, keep sending out what you have never done, and move a category in-house only after it has been proven on your own scrap and your own metals. At the Microscope, the Skill Being Bought Is Aiming

A bench jeweler is not looking for more power. They are looking for the ability to put a small amount of it exactly where they intend, while watching it happen.

That is why the working posture matters more than the specification. You hold the piece the way you always hold it, you look through the eyepieces, and the joint is made in the position you already chose. Nothing is handed over to a second setup halfway through, so the accuracy you achieved by looking is the accuracy that survives to the finished joint.

For a jeweler working alone, that also means the machine follows your habits rather than replacing them. Metal-by-metal behaviour is the next thing worth reading — it is where the judgement calls actually live.

A studio week holds repairs, remodels, personalization, prototypes and small runs. They all want the same station — and they do not want it in the same state.

This is the hardest case of the four, so it is the one worth taking apart properly. Everything below is about scheduling and parameter discipline, not about the machine's abilities.

One · Why this one

Two Unlike Jobs Are Competing for the Same Station

Repairs arrive unplanned and are usually urgent to somebody. Studio work is planned, continuous and easy to postpone — which is exactly why it gets postponed. Every other bench on this page runs one kind of work. The studio runs both through one station, so the day has to be designed, not simply worked through.

The real subject: not what the machine can do, but who gets it and in what order.
Two · What it costs

An Unplanned Day Charges You Twice at the Same Bench

Left to arrival order, the mixed day fails in two specific places — the clamp and the settings.

  • The interrupted sequence. An urgent repair lands mid-prototype; the piece is released and the position is gone.
  • Settings rebuilt from memory. Returning to yesterday's metal, you re-derive by trial instead of reading a record.
  • Trial done on the wrong piece. Re-derivation under time pressure happens on the customer's work, not on scrap.
  • The postponed half of the week. Studio work slides to the end of the day, when the bench is tired.
Three · How to run it

Block the Day by Parameter Family, Not by Who Shouted

Group work that shares a metal and a joint type, and run it as one block. Repairs taken at the counter can wait in a tray until their block is ready; a prototype halfway through a sequence cannot. Decide the interrupt rule in the morning and write it down, so the decision is not made under pressure at the moment it is needed.

What it buys you: the piece leaves the work area at a joint you finished, never in the middle of one.
Three · And the record

A Written Parameter Log Is the Other Half of the Method

Keep a paper record beside the machine: metal, joint type, the setting used, and what the result looked like. Returning to a metal then becomes a lookup rather than an experiment. Where a piece is unlike anything logged, the first joint is made on scrap of the same metal — because no single parameter set covers every metal, and pretending otherwise is what ruins a customer's piece.

Note: a log written by one person is also how a second operator inherits the bench.
Four · How to check it

Five Checks You Can Run on Your Own Week, Today

There is no number we could publish that would settle this for your studio. These checks use your own week as the evidence — run them before you decide anything.

  • Interrupt count. In a normal week, how often did you release an unfinished piece to run something else?
  • Log test. Take last week's joint — can you reproduce its settings from a record, or by trial?
  • Block survival. Does any studio block ever run start to finish without the repair tray reaching into it?
  • Metal jumps. Count how many times a day the schedule forces a change of metal, and therefore of setting.
  • End-of-day pile. Is what is left sorted into families, or simply stacked in the order it arrived?
How to read the answers: a high interrupt count with a thin log is a scheduling problem, and scheduling problems are fixable at no cost.
Five · When this stops working

When the Schedule Is Not the Problem and Capacity Is

Blocking a day only helps while the station still has hours nobody is fighting over. If repairs arrive steadily from open to close and the studio work carries fixed delivery dates, no arrangement of blocks will rescue it — you are short of station time, not short of order. Three signals say you have crossed that line:

  • Studio work slips to the evening every week, not occasionally when something unusual happens.
  • A second person waits for the station instead of working, and the waiting is routine.
  • The tray never empties, it only changes shape between families.

Space-limited workshops

When One Bench Corner Has to Carry Several Steps

A small workshop does not choose equipment by capability alone. It chooses by what it is willing to give up in exchange.

The day here is short on jobs and long on constraints: a few precision tasks, one working surface, and no spare corner to dedicate to anything. What matters is that welding, cutting and marking arrive as one decision rather than three separate ones, each with its own place to stand and its own routine to remember.

The Days This Machine Should Not Be Asked to Carry

The M3 does not replace every specialized machine for every application, and we are not going to tell you it does. Here is where a different answer is the right one.

  • The same joint, all day, every day. A repetitive series belongs on dedicated production equipment.
  • Long marking runs on flat parts. Once the batch grows, a dedicated marking system out-paces a shared station.
  • Work outside the validated configurations. Gold, silver and platinum are validated; anything else is reviewed, never assumed.
  • Stone-set and heat-sensitive pieces. Judged case by case, never as a blanket rule — see the five questions opposite.
  • A bench nobody can spare to learn. Aiming under magnification is a skill built only by repetition.
  • Several operators needing the station at once. One station stays one station, however well the day is planned.

If your week sits close to one of those lines, say so before you buy. A straight "that one is not for the M3" costs you nothing today and prevents a machine that sits unused later.

Five Questions Before Any Stone-Set Piece Is Accepted

We do not claim that all gemstones and metals can be processed safely under the same conditions. Each piece is assessed on its own, on these five points:

  • Gemstone type. Species first — the stone decides more than the metal does.
  • Treatment. Any filling, dyeing or enhancement changes the answer.
  • Setting structure. How the stone is held, and what holds the holder.
  • Distance from the working area. How far the joint sits from the stone.
  • Heat sensitivity. How the stone responds to heat near it at all.

Unidentified stone? Treat it as an open question, and send photographs of the setting before committing.

What Shop Owners Ask Before Changing How the Day Runs

The work stops queueing in two places, the margin stops being split, and the counter can answer questions about a job that is physically behind the shop. What does not change automatically is skill: move categories in-house one at a time, prove each on your own scrap and your own metals first, and keep sending out anything your bench has never done.

It depends entirely on whether the two of you need it simultaneously or in turn. Run the checks in the mixed day section for a normal week. If one person routinely waits at the station while the other works, that is a capacity limit and no scheduling method removes it — you need a second station.

Write the interrupt rule down before the day starts, so it is not decided under pressure. Group jobs by metal and joint type into blocks; hold counter intake in a tray until its block comes round. If a block genuinely must be broken, break it at a finished joint rather than mid-sequence, and log the setting before you release the piece.

The honest test is your own volume, not the machine. A single bench with steady fine work under magnification is squarely the case this layout is built around. A shop running the same joint continuously, or a long marking series on flat parts, is better served by dedicated equipment. Anyone using the station needs their own practice on scrap — results are not identical between operators, and no amount of shared instruction changes that.
