Ring sizing, chain links, prong tips and broken findings are joined under the microscope, in the same spot where you already hold the piece — no walk to a separate welding station.

Cutting Without a Second Setup

Sprues, tight links and excess stock are cut in the same working area, so the piece is not unclamped and carried to another machine between two steps of the same job.

The Scarce Resource at a Bench Is Space, Not Capability

A jeweler rarely lacks a way to join metal. What is missing is surface and movement. Three separate devices mean three places to stand, three fixtures to re-learn and three areas of the bench you can no longer put a tray on. The constraint is the room around your hands.

Every Machine Change Is a Chance to Lose the Position

  • Re-finding the joint. Each move to another device means locating the same spot again under a different optic.
  • Knocks during re-clamping. Thin shanks and set stones take their risk from handling, not only from heat.
  • Bench surface disappears. Two occupied corners and there is nowhere left to set the tray down.
  • Three sets of habits. Separate controls and separate settings for steps of a single job.
Three · How we do it

Shared Optics, One Work Area, Switching on the Display

All three functions use the same optical path and the same open work area, so the piece is positioned once, under one binocular microscope. Operations are selected on the integrated display rather than at another machine. The air-cooled architecture removes the external water tank that normally decides where a laser has to live.

What that changes: the piece is located once, and nothing has to be plumbed in beside the bench.

Test the Claim Against Your Own Bench, Not Our Wording

There is no single number that proves consolidation. Use these checks instead — they are answerable at your workbench today.

  • Same clamping test. Can weld and mark be finished without releasing the piece?
  • Opening test. Does the largest item you regularly repair fit into the work area?
  • Leftover bench test. After the unit is placed, is there still room for your daily tools?
  • Utilities test. Does anything else have to be plumbed, hosed or wheeled in beside it?
Five · Where the limit is

What Still Belongs on a Dedicated Machine — Said Plainly

The M3 does not replace every specialized machine for every application, and we will not tell you it does. Consolidation pays off in repair and small-batch bench work. Past that line, purpose-built equipment is still the right tool:

  • Continuous production volume. Repetitive runs all day are a job for dedicated production equipment, not a bench station shared by three tasks.
  • Work outside validated configurations. Anything beyond what the M3 is configured and validated for should be reviewed before it is quoted, not assumed.
  • Stone-set and heat-sensitive pieces. Gem species, treatments, setting structure and distance from the work zone decide the answer case by case.
  • Long marking series on flat parts. A dedicated marking system will out-pace a shared station once the batch grows.

Questions Goldsmiths Ask Before Choosing a Jewelry Laser

All three functions run in the same work area on the M3, which covers the majority of repair and small-batch bench work. It is not a substitute for every specialized machine: continuous production runs, applications outside the configurations the M3 is validated for, and long marking series on flat parts still belong on purpose-built equipment. Describe your job to us and we will tell you which side of that line it falls on.

The unit measures approximately 300 × 340 × 320 mm, so it occupies a corner of a standard jeweler's bench rather than its own table. Leave clearance for airflow and for the piece you are holding. If space is your deciding factor, compare that footprint against your bench on the bench footprint page before you order.

No. The M3 is air-cooled, so there is no external chiller to place under the bench, no hoses across the floor and no water to change. That is a large part of why it can live on a working bench instead of in a dedicated equipment corner. Normal ventilation and fume extraction practice for your workshop still applies.

Yes — gold, silver and platinum are among the precious metals the M3 is validated on. Alloys and finished pieces still vary, and thin, hollow or previously repaired items behave differently from fresh stock. The reliable way to settle it for your own work is a sample: send the metal and the joint you actually deal with, and see the result on your piece.

Often, but never as a blanket rule — we do not claim that all gemstones and metals can be processed safely under the same conditions. Each piece is assessed on gem species, any treatments, the setting structure, the distance from the work zone and how heat-sensitive the stone is. Send photographs of the setting before committing to the repair, and treat any unidentified stone as an open question.

There is a genuine learning curve, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling. Aiming under the microscope, choosing a starting parameter and reading the joint are skills built by repetition. Practise on scrap in the same metals you repair, keep notes of what worked, and expect steady improvement rather than an immediate switch. Training and support exists for exactly this stage.
